A leading global healthcare organization has successfully implemented new internships in Cusco, Peru, providing healthcare services and cultural experiences to underserved communities. IMA significantly impacts communities through Hygiene Education Sessions and Medical Clinics. Interns gain hands-on experience in Peru’s public healthcare system and participate in cultural treks.
International Medical Aid (IMA) is proud to announce the success of new healthcare internships in Cusco, Peru. These internships have provided valuable healthcare services, education, and cultural immersion experiences to underserved communities in Peru while offering interns a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a diverse healthcare setting.
Throughout the program, IMA has made a significant impact through various initiatives. One of the highlights has been the Hygiene Education Sessions, and Community Medical Clinics held in Huallacocha, Suisa, and Chacán. These interactive workshops have empowered locals with essential hygiene knowledge while the medical team provided vital care to those in need. The warm reception from these close-knit communities has fostered lasting connections and created a foundation for future collaboration.
IMA’s Peru study abroad programs have also provided interns with invaluable clinical and didactic experiences. Collaborating with the renowned Hospital Nacional Adolfo Guevara Velasco-EsSalud, interns have had the opportunity to work within Peru’s public healthcare system, gaining exposure to various clinical departments under the guidance of skilled Physician Mentors. Global Health Lectures have offered insights into Peru’s healthcare system, emphasizing its distinctiveness from that of the United States and highlighting the primary disease domains in Peru.
Furthermore, IMA’s pre-clinical internships have included comprehensive clinical simulations, where interns learn essential medical skills, including suture techniques, injections, blood draws, and airway management. These simulations, led by dedicated Physician Mentors, ensure a safe and simulated environment for interns to develop and refine their medical abilities.
Beyond the healthcare internships, IMA’s programs in Peru also offer captivating cultural treks that allow interns to explore Cusco’s remarkable wonders. From visiting the awe-inspiring fortress of Sacsayhuaman to discovering the enigmatic ruins of Tambomachay, interns are immersed in the rich historical and cultural significance of this UNESCO World Heritage site. They also have the chance to interact with the vibrant local culture, indulging in the lively markets and experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Peruvian people.
In line with the mission to expand healthcare access and create lasting global change, IMA successfully conducted its inaugural Community Medical Clinic in the Chacán community near Cusco City. This clinic began targeted outreach efforts in Peru, addressing the healthcare needs of underserved communities. In collaboration with local clinicians and healthcare providers, IMA delivered comprehensive screening and interventional care, including specialized services such as obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) care. This clinic exemplifies IMA’s commitment to establishing enduring, mutually beneficial partnerships with local communities and working towards long-term healthcare improvements.
Looking ahead, IMA plans to expand its efforts in Peru throughout the summer and beyond, aiming to foster stronger partnerships with local communities and further enhance healthcare access and outcomes. By adopting a sustainable approach and empowering communities to take charge of their healthcare, IMA envisions a future where everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic background.
