Lapaz 150th Celebration to Raise Funds for Park Renovations

LAPAZ, Ind. – The town of Lapaz is home to just over 500 residents, and the close-knit community gathered together Saturday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the town’s existence.

The celebration kicked off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with a free pancake breakfast, and events and games will be happening throughout the day with all proceeds going toward the betterment of the park.

In 1873, the town was founded by a mineral miner from South America, and since the early 1900s, the Lapaz Community Park has been an integral part of the community.

On June 22, the park property will be officially transferred from the Lapaz township to the town park board.

With the property under the park board’s control, the town can apply for development grants to improve the facilities at the current park.

The park’s additions will be rolled out in three phases, with the first phase set to add walking trails and a pair of pickleball courts by November of this year.

Further features will be rolled out in 2024 throughout the course of the project, which will cost $280,000 in total.

The board hopes to eventually have four pickleball courts, new basketball courts, walking trails, a climbing boulder and more.
